An expert in entertainment law for
over 35 years, Barry Jay Reiss is currently the Principal of the Law
Office
of Barry Jay Reiss, a private practice firm specializing in Entertainment, Intellectual
Property and Direct Marketing Law. As an experienced private, corporate attorney
and senior executive who has represented major talent in music, media, literature
and fashion, Mr. Reiss has the unique perspective of having served on "both
sides of the table."
Mr. Reiss' long history on both the legal and
corporate sides of the entertainment industry include entering the music business
as a junior partner in the firm representing artists such as Herman's Hermits,
Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. After five years, Mr. Reiss was lured out of private
practice by Clive Davis to join him at CBS Records. When Clive Davis left CBS,
he asked Mr. Reiss to join him to help form Arista Records.
After a series
of senior corporate positions in the music industry including Executive Vice President
of Infinity Records and a multitude of top positions at MCA Records including
Vice President for Legal and Business Affairs and Vice President of Trademark
and Copyright, Mr. Reiss was appointed East Coast General Counsel for MCA, Inc.
including it's book publishing, toy and Spencer Gifts divisions. In this capacity,
Mr. Reiss guided MCA's acquisition of Grosset and Dunlap, Playboy Books and LJN
Toys.
Mr. Reiss later left MCA to re-enter private practice, representing
clients such as U2, Valient Comics, The Allman Brothers Band and Universal Television.
Other positions Mr. Reiss has held include Senior Vice President of Business and
Consumer Affairs for Columbia House, in which he was responsible for Business,
Consumer and Government Affairs including negotiating the company's major licensing
agreements, representing it's interests in federal and state legislative matters,
postal issues consumer relations activities, and the launching of its two internet
sites.
Mr. Reiss has also served as a member of the Motion Picture Association
of America (MPAA) and Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) Labor Negotiation
and Anti-Piracy Committees, the RIAA Copyright Law Revision Committee, as a member
of the Board of Directors of the Association for Postal Commerce and on the Government
Affairs and Privacy Committees of the Direct Marketing Association.
Mr. Reiss
is the author of "Intellectual Property Rights in Music," Law Journal
Video Seminar, 2003. He is a graduate of Columbia College and received a Bachelor
of Law Degree, Cum Laude, from Columbia University School of Law. Now operating
a thriving private practice of his own, Mr. Reiss' goal is to provide high quality
legal services to the creative community.
